Spices give our food aroma, color, and flavor. They can make it sweeter, more bitter, or stronger. They are indispensable in almost any kitchen. Spices, even in small quantities, can have a great impact on the culinary result. Herbs are harvested from a wide variety of plants. Often it is the bark, seeds, roots, leaves and berries that undergo a process so that they can be used in our food. Virtually all spices are dried and most are crushed. Characteristic of the spices is that they contain more or less powerful aromas and flavors. These are organic substances, so-called essential oils, which give the spice plants their characteristic aroma and taste. Herbs are also spices.
