The Greeks were some of the first to grow the olive tree around 2.500 B.C. Crete has one of the oldest olive trees in the world, which is believed to be up to 4.000 years old. The great importance of the olive tree in ancient times made it a symbol of peace and wealth. It was the symbol of the goddess Athena. In the classic Olympic Games, an olive twig was given to the winner. The olive tree and its oil have always been an important basic element of the Greek people and have been the main element of Greek food culture since the beginning of civilization. The Greek poet Homer (Omiros) once described Greek olive oil as "liquid gold".
With its fantastic climate with lots of sun and a hilly landscape, Crete has the perfect conditions for olive trees and olive oil production. At Greek Market, you can find olive oil for every taste.
Our producer from Crete hand-harvests olives, and extracts the olive oil the same day they are harvested.
